Two years of saving, eager anticipation and planning summarize recent activities of enthusiastic guests from the United Kingdom (UK). Regular comments and responses on Mavela’s Facebook page this past year reflected their excitement as “D-Day” approached to introduce their friends to a South African Safari.
Giselle Bawden and Melody Barber recently spent three, wonderful nights re-connecting with staff and showing their guests, Ian and Christine Warhurst, the African bush. Born in Cape Town, Giselle now lives in the UK and works hard to save for her regular African odyssey, ensuring Mavela is always on her itinerary. With such a diverse choice of safari lodges we asked her, “What is it that keeps you returning to Mavela?”
1. VALUE FOR MONEY
“When doing our research, we benchmark against locality, affordability, ethics, previous experience, Trip Advisor etc. Returning for the fourth time to Mavela is an endorsement on how much we love and enjoy it. Every moment of our holiday is valuable and the game drives are exceptional,” replied Giselle.
2. AWESOME GAME DRIVES
True to form, field guide Brad Smith had the four guests relishing adventurous safari drives and came out tops like a “heat-seeking missile” with a range of sightings and some close encounters with the “king of the jungle” to pump the guests’ adrenalin.
3. CLOSE TO NATURE
The stunning winter skies welcomed the UK visitors with a palate of beautiful sunrises and sunsets and generated a peaceful backdrop for guests to relax and unwind from a hardworking year. These simple, yet serene scenes, contributed to their “magical Mavela moments” and would be “added to the memory bank”, said Giselle.
The fact that the Mavela Game Lodge camp is not fenced enhances the proximity with nature and it is simply stunning to lie at night and listen to the lone call of a black-backed jackal, lions roaring or the hoot of an owl. During the day, it is incredible to sit quietly on your tent deck and survey the impala and warthog that frequent the camp and the colourful array of birds that swamp the bird baths. Mavela’s recent blogs Tent No 3 and A gust of wind and a spot of luck! emphasize this special encounter with nature.
4. RELAXED ATMOSPHERE
Back at the lodge, relaxing on the pool deck with refreshments and paging through guidebooks helped the guests understand the diversity of wildlife that exists in the Manyoni Private Game Reserve. The incessant chatter of Burchell’s Glossy Starlings or Yellow-eyed Canaries fill the air daily with a natural symphony.
The friendly banter between staff and guests during delicious, three-course meals and a jovial prank with a rhino beetle on a plate, had the UK contingent in fits of laughter – good for the soul! Other guests often comment on the friendly environment which help them to relax and feel at home.
5. COMFORTABLE ACCOMMODATION
The safari tents are well-equipped with comfortable beds, cotton sheets and luxurious supply of toiletries with attention to detail in the decor. This simple “glamping-style” adds a glamourous touch to traditional camping and is relished by guests after the adventurous game drives.
Giselle said that she “regrets not booking for five nights as the three nights flew by far too quickly” and that “she cried when she left”. She is already looking forward to her next visit!
